When it seems that refusing naughty children access to new toys is not enough to make them behave, an old tale from the Alpine region of Europe and southern Germany speaks of an alternative Christmas figure. Some believe that Krampus pre-dates the coming of Christianity into the Germanic speaking regions of Europe and is a much older figure associated with the Winter Equinox. He is a beastly figure, looking rather demonic and certainly frightening to children.
